My Kid’s Favorite Graphic Novels

by Cristina | Last Updated: June 15, 2021

My kids cannot get enough of graphic novels. Before the graphic novel craze, it was so hard for me to find books that they wanted to read. If you are anything like me, you have shelves of books that your kids just refuse to touch or look at. Finding books that your kids actually want to read is like a trying to find the back of an earring in a sandbox.  You can spend hours searching, and still come up with nothing. The selection of kid’s books are endless, and when you are trying to compete with Ipads and TV it’s hard to find something that will hold their attention.

I have come to rely solely on word of mouth from other moms as the surest way to get a book in their hands that they are going to enjoy.  I am here to be that mom for you.  Today I want to share with you the graphic novels that have made my kids cannot live without.

These series have been read and re-read by each of our kids countless of times over the last couple of years. They fight for who is going to read what each night, and even count down to the release of the next book. In a world filled with Roblox and Minecraft- this is priceless.

I am not being paid, these are not affiliate links. This is just a little help from one parent to another.

Dog Man: (Author Dav Pilkey) This is the graphic novel that started it all for us. It’s about a half dog/half police officer who is fighting crime. I even love reading these with them. It’s totally ridiculous and absurd but it’s hilarious, and our kids have probably read them so many times they can recite pages from memory. Currently there are 10 of these, and my kids constantly ask when they can get their hands on the next one. Shop them all HERE. There is also a new spin off called Cat Kid Comic Club that can hold them over in the mean time.

The Bad Guys: (Author Aaron Blabey) A series about a bunch of guys who may look bad but want to do good. The writing is hilarious and the illustrations are over the top awesome. There are currently 12 but book 13 is set to be released on July 6, 2021. I know this because I have been asked almost every single day since they all read book 12 the day it arrived to our house. Shop them all HERE.

Smile: (Author Raina Telgemeier) This series has been more popular with my girls. It starts with Smile and it’s about a girl in middle school who wants more than anything to fit in, but she falls and hurts her front teeth and is dealing with a dental disaster making fitting in impossible. You follow her as she becomes a big sister in Sisters and on other adventures in Guts, Drama and Ghosts. Shop the set HERE

The Baby-Sitter’s Club: (Author Ann M. Martin) They have taken our beloved Babysitter’s Club and turned them into a vibrant beautiful graphic novel, that our kids cannot get enough of. They are the same stories we love but with a fresh twist and illustration. Currently there are 9 of these with the 10th book being released this fall. Shop them all HERE.  There is also a spinoff series called Baby-Sitter’s Little Sisters that is adorable.

The Tree House Series: (Author Andy Griffiths) Currently there are 10 books in this series that they can read in order or as a stand alone book. It starts with the 13 Story Treehouse and goes all the way up to The 130 Story Treehouse. This treehouse has thirteen stories, a bowling alley, a see-through swimming pool, a secret underground laboratory, and a marshmallow machine that follows you around and automatically shoots marshmallows into your mouth whenever you are hungry. You can buy it HERE, and you can check out THIS page for more information.

Real Friends: (Author Shannon Hale) In the words of my daughter, Blake, it is a story about a girl who is trying to find her people. This series is currently three books: Real Friends, Best Friends, and Forever Friends. You can find them HERE

Captain Under Pants: (Author Dav Pilkey) I’ve come to love this rather weird looking man child. Mostly because he entertains my son, and I would probably take anything over him watching Pokemon. But when he found out that Captain Under Pants was a graphic novel, he begged for them and hasn’t put them down since. There are currently 12 in this series, with number 13 coming out later this fall. You can shop them HERE
